What it was like on the ground
Bama was the strangest stop on our trip: the 'longevity village' framing feels commercial, with buses of domestic tourists buying spring water, but step past it and the karst is extraordinary. We rode a small boat through Sanyue Cave's three sinkhole lakes, the water impossibly blue, and met a Yao family who served us corn wine in a stilt house. Hechi is not easy to reach and not easy to explain, but it is the Guangxi most foreigners never know exists.
